Shampoo & Conditioner After a Keratin Treatment

Gentle shampoos and conditioners for the weeks after a smoothing treatment, chosen to pair with a mask and a heat protectant.

Which Shampoo to Use After a Keratin Treatment

First, follow the directions that came with your treatment — they say when the first wash can happen and what to use for it. After that, the best shampoo after a keratin treatment is a gentle one, always followed by conditioner.

Salt-Free Is Not the Same as Sulfate-Free

“Salt-free” means no added sodium chloride, which some shampoos use as a thickener. “Sulfate-free” means no sulfate cleansing agents. One does not imply the other. The Onion & Coffee line is sold as salt-free; if avoiding sulfates matters to you, check the ingredient list on the label.

Conditioner, Mask and Heat Protection

  1. Condition from mid-lengths to ends at every wash and leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. Mask once a week with the Onion & Coffee hair mask or another from our hair masks.
  3. Protect with the leave-in heat protectant before blow-drying or flat-ironing.

The keratin treatment aftercare guide covers the first wash, heat styling, swimming and what shortens a smoothing result.

Shampoo After Keratin: Questions

Can I use normal shampoo after a keratin treatment?

Harsh cleansers can shorten a smoothing result, so most stylists suggest a gentle shampoo used with conditioner every time. Check your treatment’s directions and your stylist’s advice.

Can I use conditioner after a keratin treatment?

Yes. With Hair Liss Perfect, the directions allow the first wash with only a mask or a hydrating conditioner, and conditioner belongs in every wash after that.

When should I use a clarifying or detox shampoo?

Deep-cleansing shampoos are for occasional use, not every wash. After a smoothing treatment, ask your stylist how soon one is appropriate.
