Hair is made mostly of keratin, a tough structural protein. Heat styling, coloring, sun and everyday wear roughen the outer layer of the hair — the cuticle — so strands catch on each other, reflect less light and absorb moisture from the air. That is what frizz is.
A keratin hair treatment is a conditioning formula that is applied to the hair, left to process and then sealed with heat from a blow dryer and a flat iron. The result is a smoother surface: hair that looks shinier, feels softer and is quicker to style. The effect is temporary and fades gradually as you wash your hair. How long it lasts depends on your hair type, the product and how you care for it afterward.
Keratin Treatment or Hair Straightening Treatment?
The two terms overlap. “Keratin treatment” is often used for any smoothing service that reduces frizz, while a hair straightening treatment aims for a straighter result and involves more thorough flat-ironing. With the same product, technique changes the outcome: fewer passes with the iron keep more of your natural movement; more passes give a straighter finish.
