How to Choose an Anti-Frizz Serum
What a serum can and can’t do for frizz, how to match one to your hair, and how to apply it so it smooths without weighing hair down.
What an Anti-Frizz Serum Does
A hair serum is a finishing product. It leaves a thin film on the surface of the hair that makes strands lie flatter, reflect more light and slide past each other instead of catching. The visible result is shine, softer-feeling ends and fewer flyaways.
Because it works on the surface, a serum also slows down how quickly hair takes on moisture from the air — which is why it helps in humid weather.
What a Serum Can’t Do
- It doesn’t repair damage. Split ends look smoother under a serum but still need a trim.
- It doesn’t replace conditioner or a mask. Dry hair needs conditioning first.
- It isn’t automatically a heat protectant. Use a product made for that before hot tools.
- It doesn’t make hair humidity-proof.
Choosing by Hair Type
| Your hair | Look for | From our range |
|---|---|---|
| Fine, easily weighed down | A lightweight, non-greasy formula. Use the smallest amount, ends only. | November Rain |
| Medium to thick, dry ends | A richer serum that adds gloss and conditions the ends. | Gloss Black Rose |
| Any type, for shine | A finishing oil-serum for a silky, glossy look. | MANIA Oil |
All three are scented, so fragrance is part of the choice. If you are sensitive to fragrance, check the label first.
How to Apply It
- Start small. One or two drops for fine or short hair; three or four for thick or long hair. You can add more, but you can’t take it out.
- Warm it in your palms so it spreads evenly.
- Apply from mid-lengths to ends. Keep it away from the roots, which have their own natural oil.
- Smooth what’s left on your hands lightly over the surface to catch flyaways.
On damp hair, a serum helps detangle and smooths as the hair dries. On dry hair, it is a finishing touch for shine. Many people do both, using very little each time.
Serum, Leave-In or Heat Protectant?
- Leave-in heat protectant — goes on first, on damp hair, before the dryer or iron. See Mania Complex Leave-In Heat Protectant.
- Serum — goes on last, for surface smoothness and shine.
- Mask — a weekly treatment in the shower for deeper conditioning. See hair masks.
Common Mistakes
- Using too much. Greasy, flat hair almost always means too much product.
- Applying at the roots. It flattens volume and makes hair look unwashed.
- Expecting it to fix dry hair. If frizz comes from dryness, condition more and mask weekly; then finish with serum.
- Skipping it in humidity. A light layer before you go out is easier than trying to smooth frizz later.
When a Serum Isn’t Enough
