Keratin is the protein that hair is mostly made of. In cosmetics, “keratin” usually refers to hydrolyzed keratin — keratin broken into small fragments that can coat and condition the hair fiber — and to salon-style smoothing treatments that are sealed with heat.
The two are used differently:
- Keratin smoothing treatments are applied to clean hair, left to process and sealed with a blow dryer and flat iron. They make hair smoother and shinier for a period of time. See keratin treatments and hair straightening treatments.
- Keratin conditioning products — liquid keratin, and shampoos or masks that include it — are part of regular care and need no heat sealing. See hair masks and repair treatments.
Neither changes hair permanently. Smoothing results fade with washing, and conditioning products work for as long as you keep using them.
